Pioneering Afro-Music in Vietnam: A Journey of Rhythm, Culture & Community Impact

Bringing the heartbeat of Africa thousands of miles across the continent and into Southeast Asia has been one of the most defining parts of my journey in Vietnam. Since 2010, I have dedicated myself to pioneering Afro-music—introducing the sounds of Highlife, Bembé, Afrobeat, and contemporary African rhythms to audiences across Hanoi. What began as small café performances soon evolved into a movement: a vibrant cultural bridge that blended African authenticity with Vietnamese curiosity and global community spirit.

A Cultural Legacy Built on Sound

From the early days of playing Reggae, Highlife, and Afrobeat in small rooftop cafés near Hanoi’s Old Quarter, to leading the city’s only Afrobeat International Live Band and its African Contemporary Choir, the mission has always remained the same:
to share Africa’s sound, soul, and story with the world.

Whether performing Afrobeat hits infused with Highlife guitar lines, delivering Bembé 6/8 percussive rhythms, or blending contemporary African harmonies with modern arrangements, each show became more than entertainment—it became cultural education.
Audiences danced, learned, connected, and embraced the richness of African music in ways that continue to echo through Hanoi’s diverse artistic landscape.

Afro-Music as a Force for Good

Supporting charitable work has always been at the heart of my creative journey. My partnership with the Hanoi International Women’s Club (HIWC)—an organization known for its collaboration with the United Nations International School, foreign embassies, and community-driven groups—remains one of the most meaningful chapters of my career.

I had the privilege of leading both the Afrobeat International Live Band and the African Contemporary Choir at multiple HIWC Charity Bazaar events. Each performance delivered powerful, high-energy Afro-music that kept crowds dancing and lifted the atmosphere from morning until late afternoon.

But more importantly:
these performances raised funds that are still transforming lives today.
Through these events, countless charitable initiatives gained the support needed to uplift vulnerable communities, advance education, and strengthen humanitarian efforts across Hanoi and beyond.

Expanding the Influence of African Music in Vietnam

Over time, the presence of Afro-music in Hanoi has grown from a niche cultural offering into a recognized artistic identity. International audiences, expatriate communities, and local Vietnamese music lovers alike have embraced the distinctive rhythms of Africa.

Today, Afrobeat, Highlife, Afrojazz, Bembé, and other African genres continue to feature in festivals, community gatherings, cultural nights, and special events across the city—driven by the foundation built more than a decade ago.

A Continuing Mission

My journey is still unfolding. Whether through live performances, cultural collaborations, community outreach, or mentorship for young artists, my goal remains consistent:
to elevate African music, promote cultural understanding, and use art as a tool for meaningful change.

Afro-music is more than sound—
it is movement, memory, and message.
And sharing it here in Vietnam has been one of the most fulfilling honors of my life.
